Description
DATE: Art Deco, c.1925
This fantastic Art Deco Egyptian Revival lotus flower pendant set with diamond, emerald, and onyx. The form, subject, and bold use of calibré cut coloured stones make it quintessentially Art Deco, and the quality is second-to-none. All geometric lines and millegrain details, it's crafted in platinum throughout, and arranged around a stunning central 1.35 carat old Euro diamond contrasting beautifully with the jet black onyx. The diamonds total approx. 2.65 carats, and the emeralds are a divine touch. Dating from the mid 1920s riding the wave of Egyptomania that washed over Europe and America after the discovery of Tutankhamen's tomb in 1922.
The lotus flower was a popular motif in ancient Egyptian culture. It reflected the rising sun at the dawn of creation, closing up overnight and reopening each morning to display a ring of white petals around a central yellow circle. A potent symbol representing the physical embodiment of daily rebirth and rejuvenation. In addition, the plant was valued for its medicinal, pain relieving properties.
