Description

DATE: Early Victorian, c.1840

A fantastic Early Victorian hair pin/comb topped with a gorgeous diving swallow, set with cut steel that glistens when moved in the light. Birds of all kinds were depicted in Victorian jewellery, but the most common were swallows and doves. Swallows were a very romantic symbol, and were said to represent faithfulness. Featuring two prongs and adjustable fittings, it allows easy wear and perfect fit while in your hair. Cut-steel jewellery is jewellery “set” with tiny faceted steel studs, made to resemble gemstones. It dates as far back as the 16th Century and enjoyed a popular reception especially between the 18th century and end of the 1930’s.
