DATE: Georgian, c.1780

“Not Lost But Gone Before”

This miniature seal fob dates from the Georgian period, circa 1780. It's set with a round chalcedony base and is carved with the words “Not Lost But Gone Before”. A great example of memorial jewellery, with an ornately decorated body, crafted in 9k gold. 

We have to separate ourselves from the modern ideas of how to memorialize people. Now, grief can be expressed online with photographs or to others, of course we grieve and remember people differently. But for the Georgians, they most likely faced death more often than we do, and this was their way of keeping their memory alive.
