Victorian Cupid & Psyche Silver Intaglio Pendant

$1,236.49

Description

DATE: Victorian, c.1880 (frame is contemporary)

The tale of Eros-Cupid and Psyche is one of the most famous love stories of all time, and certainly one of the most captivating from the ancient Greek mythos. Although born a mortal woman, Psyche was ultimately deified on Mount Olympus at the request of Eros. The pair are depicted here under an apple (?) tree, Psyche's foot caught in an animal trap with Eros having just arrived on the scene to set her free. Another example of "Love Conquers All", presumably.

This exquisite pendant features a 19th century silver intaglio scene mounted in a later gold pendant frame, Eros/Cupid in his chubby cherubic form and Psyche distinguished by the presence of a a tiny butterfly flying between the pair.
