DATE: Art Deco/Egyptian Revival, c.1920
The Egyptian Revival era of jewellery took place during the Art Deco period, when Tutankhamun's Tomb was discovered. This piece, a charming Egyptian Revival sarcophagus charm crafted in 18k gold throughout. The front is finished in fine red and blue enamel, with hieroglyphics to the back.
The hieroglyphics typically included their name and title, and were usually decorated beautifully. The line of hieroglyphics which run vertically down the back represents the backbone of the deceased, and was thought to provide strength to the mummy in rising to eat and drink.
Comes complete with gold fittings for wear on a chain, and this lovely piece dates to circa 1920.
