Here we have a cool, gothic and unusual Victorian curiosity... A skull sculpture (yes, its adult sized and weighs around 220 grams!) displayed in a domed glass casing. Spooky but pretty cool right? A fantastic piece of decor, displayed perfectly in an original Victorian glass dome display jar. These jars, or cloches were originally used for things like taxidermy! And its finished with a velvet cover where the skull rests and a black stand. Considering this skull is made out of plaster, my best guess is that it was used for medical use and learning, however it also holds a powerful symbol...
As well as looking badass, the skull also symbolizes memento mori. The concept of Memento Mori, remember that you will die, has been around since ancient times; probably for as long as humans have existed. These words have echoed throughout the ages, and serve as a reminder of the transient nature of life. They urge us to reflect on mortality in order to make the most of each moment, to better ourselves, and to fully engage with life.
Who loves these mystical, gothic and cool objects? And where would you place it?
