Victorian Jeweller's Sample Case of Buckle Rings
Victorian Jeweller's Sample Case of Buckle Rings
$4,450.00
Description
DATE: Victorian, c.1880
A 19th Century curiosity... An original jewellers sample case of buckle rings. Jewellers would take these cases round, showing their "samples" off to shops and retailers. This piece, an original burgundy box that opens from the front, which opens to reveal a set of 10 sample buckle rings, plated in 18k gold. As they are sample rings, these pieces were not crafted in sold gold due to expenses and travel, but to give the retailer an idea of what they had to offer. If an agreement was made, they could then be supplied, crafted in sold gold and in their style and design choice. These buckle ring samples feature ornate detailing, each one of different size and design, featuring"18ct Gold Cased" stamps. The rings feature the makers mark, N.C.R Co, which I believe is N C Reading & Co of Birmingham. Unfortunately, two rings are missing, I wonder where in the world they are now... Other than this, the example remains in good condition, and is a fantastic look back into the history of jewellers.
