17th Century Gold Crucifix Pendant
17th Century Gold Crucifix Pendant
$2,000.00
Description
DATE: Stuart, c.1650
An incredible 17th century (!!) gold crucifix pendant, circa 1650. It's beautifully detailed, with trefoil embellishments to the extremities of the cross, an INRI plaque above Christ's head, and featuring the long-limbed representation of Jesus common to the period. Crafted in 18 karat yellow gold, it's likely of Spanish origin.
INRI represents the Latin inscription: IESVS NAZARENVS REX IVDÆORVM, or "Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews" (John 19:19). John 19:20 states that this was written in three languages – Hebrew, Latin and Greek – and was put on the cross of Jesus.
