Georgian Natural Pearl & Rose Cut Diamond Oyster Brooch
Georgian Natural Pearl & Rose Cut Diamond Oyster Brooch
$4,700.00
Description
DATE: Georgian, c.1780
This gorgeous Georgian brooch is modelled as an oyster shell, set with an array of glistening old cut diamonds with a natural pearl that rests in the centre. Crafted in 15k gold, the stones are set in vertical rows of silver- following the asymmetric shape of the shell, but also creating great movement. These lovely rose cuts surround a large dreamy natural pearl rests in the centre of the "shell"... right where its supposed to be. It remains in fantastic condition and looks great worn as a brooch or pendant.
Its quite a striking effect, and perhaps this is a reference to the "Birth of Venus", representing fertility, beauty and love.
Natural pearls must be one of nature's finest wonders. They've been prized as gemstones for their beauty and scarcity since ancient times, and the very word "pearl" itself has become a metaphor for something rare, valuable, admirable, and beautiful. Composed of layer upon layer of calcium and conchiolin, natural pearls are grown within the soft tissue of clams, oysters, mussels etc. They're a defence mechanism against a potentially threatening irritant or parasite within the shell. So, to cut a long story short- a pearl is the creation of the immunes response- to an unwanted guest within the shell. Amazing right?
