DATE: Vintage, 1964

Show-stopping pearl suite featuring a triple strand necklace and pair of simple stud earrings. Complete with original Mitsouko (Cultured Pearls, Reg'd) presentation box, they remain in excellent condition with bright velvety lustre and pink/green overtones. The necklace clasp is crafted in the Victorian style, 9 karat gold set with a cluster of 9 further pearls. On the surface, design during 1960s displayed a culmination of early 20th century modernism... acres of brutalist concrete architecture, the space race in full swing, and earlier advances in transport becoming widely affordable for the first time (commercial aviation, personal automobiles, etc.). On an individual level the mindset wasn't quite as future-centric, with a craze - in the UK at least - for buying Victorian "doer-upper" houses and trawling antiques shops and fairs to furnish them with period furniture etc. In light of these nostalgic leanings, lamenting bygone eras (ironically enough, the 1960s brutalism is subject to a similar nostalgic obsession today) etc., it's perhaps not surprising that there was a mini "Victorian Revivalist" movement in 1960s jewellery design.
