$6,500.00
Description
DATE: Georgian, c.1800
An incredible ornate bloodstone bomboniere in the shape of an egg, and of exceptionally high quality. The bloodstone sits within an intricately openworked gold case, featuring designs such as the Cornucopia, blooming flowers, and abstract foliate swirls. It has a green enamelled band around the middle, with the French motto "L'AMITIE EN FAIT LE PRIX," and it opens - by way of a diamond-set button - to reveal an internal compartment. It dates from the early 19th Century, circa 1800.
A bomboniere would traditionally be given by hosts to their guests on special occasions (weddings, baptisms, etc.) and would have contained five sugared almonds symbolize health, wealth, happiness, fertility and long life. However this example likely contained an engagement ring, making the translation of the motto Love is the price.
