DATE: Antique, c.1860
France's most famous ruler lies buried in the heart of its nation, but this was not always the case... He had been buried on Saint Helena Island since 1821, but King Louis-Philippe decided to have his remains transferred to Les Invalides in Paris. This charm perhaps was made to commemorate this! Modelled in gilt metal, this little charm is modelled as his coffin, hinged and opening up to reveal Napoleon himself. The little figured is hinged at the bottom, and stands up as if "resurrected", finished in coloured enamel. A pretty rare and unusual thing, and it dates to around the 1860's.
