DATE: Victorian, c.1870

Fabulous High Victorian locket set with diamonds and pearls and featuring a stylised buckle motif to the front. Unusually, it also has pierced foliate motifs, which makes me wonder if it was intended to be used as a vinaigrette, for a multi-sensory experience. It' opens to reveal two oval compartments, one currently home to a chequerboard woven lock of blond hair, the other with its original glass front. It's a good large size, crafted in 15 karat gold throughout, with applied ropework details and a brushed matte finish.
