Victorian Tourmaline & Diamond Witches Heart Brooch
$1,000.00
Description
DATE: Victorian, c.1890
Charming late Victorian witches heart studded with rose cut diamonds and set with a central heart-shaped greet tourmaline. The witches heart (aka witch's heart) was a popular motif throughout the Georgian and early Victorian eras. A curved point at the bottom implied that the giver had become "bewitched" to fall in love with the recipient... in ancient times the heart was allegedly used to ward off witches and other evil spirits. This brooch is crafted in 15 karat gold with silver settings and dates from the latter half of the 19th century, circa 1890.
