$350.00
Description
DATE: Victorian, c.1880
A late Victorian German hunting amulet or trophy crafted in silver and featuring a tuft of (real) wild boar hair. It dates from the latter half of the 19th century, circa 1880, with intricately engraved oak leaf and acorn motifs to the silver top.
Charivari (pronounced "schariwari") comes from the Latin caribaria, which translates as "madness" or "pandemonium"; these talismans were worn by hunters to bring good fortune - and later as status symbols.
