DATE: WW1, c.1915
Rare original First World War period 'Tommy Touch Wud' good luck charms, in the form of smiley wooden faces. One with red paste eyes and the other the United Kingdom flag, with face and top hat, representing John Bull. The back of both show 'TOUCH WUD' and 'VICTORY' in relief. These charms were often given to soldiers when leaving for war.
John Bull is a national personification of the United Kingdom, especially in political cartoons and similar graphic works. He is usually depicted as a stout, middle-aged, jolly and matter-of-fact man. Similar to the American ‘Uncle Sam’.
