1960s Harlequin 5-Stone Ring
$750.00
Description
DATE: Vintage, c.1960
A charming 1960s harlequin ring set with pale blue topaz, lavender 'Rose de France' amethysts, and hessonite garnets. The colour palette is unusual but attractive, and the oval stones rest in crisp gold bezel settings. Crafted in 9 karat gold throughout, with lightly tapered shoulders and a flat profile band.
The name "harlequin" has long been used to describe jewellery set with many different coloured gemstones. The reference is an Italian Commedia character, Harlequin, one of the "comic servants" of the Commedia dell’Arte tradition, introduced in the late 16th century and popularised by Tristano Martinelli, the "Master of Harlequins". Characterised by his brightly chequered costume, he usually served as a direct contrast, sometimes in competition, with the sterner and melancholic Pierrot. The role was that of an astute, nimble, and overly light-hearted servant who would often attempt to thwart the plans of his master while pursuing his own love interest, Columbina.
