Edwardian "Language of Flowers" 18k Gold Locket Ring
Edwardian "Language of Flowers" 18k Gold Locket Ring
$4,300.00
Description
DATE: Edwardian, c.1902
Antique jewellery often includes floral motifs, as part of their "Language of Flowers", whereby each flower or plant represented some romantic or emotional sentiment... This gorgeous locket ring features a forget-me-not flower, and ivy leaves. According to Kate Greenaway's Language of Flowers book, these symbolize "True love, forget me not" and "Fidelity, Marriage. I cling to thee".
Featuring English hallmarks, it dates from the Edwardian period, 1902, Birmingham. The ring itself features a secret compartment... A small locket to the front where you can find a forget-me-not flower applied to the centre, set with a small but sparkly old cut diamond. The shoulders feature ivy leaves, "I cling to thee"- a gorgeous combination of sentiments, and they're modelled in two-tone gold (yellow and rose). The locket compartment is hinged down one side and opens to reveal an engraving "From WC to EW"- what a charming gift to receive, especially with the romantic sentiments shown. Remains in excellent antique condition.
