Georgian "God Save The King" Carnelian Intaglio Seal Fob
$1,600.00
Description
DATE: Georgian, c.1830
Elegant antique seal fob pendant set with a carnelian base intaglio carved with the words GOD SAVE THE KING in gothic script. Likely made to commemorate the ascention of William IV to the British throne, it features a highly ornate and deeply carved body crafted in 9 karat yellow gold. Circa 1830.
William IV succeeded his older brother, George IV, in 1830 - the fourth and penultimate Hanoverian monarch. At the time he was the oldest person to ascent to the throne (a distinction he held until 2022 when Charles III became the new king). He was (at first at least) immensely popular amongst the public at large, said to have been an unassuming, approachable and down-to-earth character, in stark contrast with his elder brother who was noted for his flamboyance and lack of interest in the more serious demands of the throne.
