DATE: Georgian, c.1830
Exceptional Georgian rivière necklace set with 22 teal paste gemstones in "pie crust" mounts. The stones are graduated and display the most dreamy shade of blue - oval faceted in open back settings. Dating from the late Georgian period, circa 1830, a time when paste gemstones could command as much or more than the natural stones they simulated. George Strass is generally credited with perfecting the technique in the 1720s, lead was added to glass to increase its refraction and dispersion (separation of light into its component colours) and minute quantities of "colouring" elements such as chromium (red and green), cobalt (blue, gold and red), iron (yellow and green), manganese (purple), and selenium (red).
