Late Victorian 4ct Aquamarine Solitaire Ring
$2,700.00
Description
DATE: Victorian, c.1890
A breath-taking antique aquamarine ring dating from the late Victorian period. The 4 carat stone displays a dreamy pale-blue hue, and is mounted in 18 karat gold with a gas-pipe style bezel and elegant trifurcated shoulders.
Aquamarine takes its name from the Latin word for "seawater", on account of it's dreamy pale blue (sometimes slightly greeny) hue. Like emerald, it is a member of the beryl family of gemstones, and has been prized - since ancient times - by sailors and seafarers who believe the stone will attract good luck and prosperity on sea voyages. The Romans believed that if an aquamarine was carved into the shape of a frog, it would reconcile enemies and and settle old scores. Another Roman legend tells that the stone can absorb the essence of young love: “When blessed and worn, it joins in love, and does great things.”
