Description
DATE: Victorian, c.1870
A cool antique Egyptian Revival scarab spinner ring dating from the 1870s. The scarab is a vivid blue colour, and formed from faience. It's set in 15k gold, with rope-work detail to the shoulders.
The term faience broadly encompassed finely glazed ceramic beads, figures and other small objects found in Egypt as early as 4000 BC. In this instance it is composed mainly of silica (sand or crushed quartz), along with small amounts of sodium and calcium, and finished with a vivid turquoise glaze.
