Description
DATE: Victorian, c.1890
This cool antique single stone ring dates from the late Victorian period, circa 1890. It’s set with an oval domed blue john cabochon which displays the striking purple, white and yellow jagged colour the stone is known for. It’s crafted in silver throughout, and features a fine ropework border and elegant split shoulders.
Blue John Stone is found nowhere in the world but the UK at the Blue John and Treak Cliff Caverns. It was mined through the 19th century for its ornamental value (mining continues on a small scale to this day). This mineral, a colour banded form of fluorspar, has been prized for many hundreds of years.
