DATE: Georgian, c.1820
Cool Georgian serpent brooch in 18 karat gold. The snake loops around itself a number of times, and its creator adorned it with ruby eyes and a cheeky (somewhat silly) grin. Snakes have been revered, feared, and adored for as long as history records. To the ancients, they symbolised rebirth, transformation, immortality, and healing - as well as eternity and renewal of life. They've been associated with both poison and medicine, guardianship, and vengeance/vindictiveness. Whatever snakes mean to you, this one is a particularly striking example, made circa 1820.
