Georgian Coral Mano Cornuto "Sign of the Horns" Charm
Georgian Coral Mano Cornuto "Sign of the Horns" Charm
$825.00
Description
DATE: Georgian, c.1830
This fantastic Georgian charm is modelled as the mano cornuto- aka sign of the horns. The hand itself is carved from vibrant natural coral, wonderfully detailed, with 15k gold fittings.
The mano cornuto (literally mano: hand, corno: horn) is an ancient Italian amulet used for magical protection against the dreaded Evil Eye and bad luck. Similar to other hand gestures such as the hamsa, manu fica, etc, this gesture has a dual meaning- as we already know, one to ward of evil spirits and two as a vulgar expression. When the gesture is directed towards someone pointed upwards, or swivelled back and forth, it takes on an offensive meaning...
